Between the lines

Created as a contemporary response to Burns Night, Between the Lines explores an abstract interpretation of traditional tartan through structure, layering, and movement.

Rather than replicating pattern, the work reimagines tartan as a living framework — where intersecting lines carry both rhythm and tension. Rich tones of deep blue, red, and metallic accents are built up through layered mark-making, allowing moments of control and disruption to exist simultaneously.

The grid becomes symbolic: of heritage, identity, and the unseen connections that sit beneath surface order. Through texture and variation, the painting moves beyond tradition into something more fluid and contemporary — holding onto its roots while allowing space for reinterpretation.
