Behind the Canvas: The Start of My Creative Journey xx
Behind the Canvas: How I Found My Way Back to Art
Three years ago, something in me shifted. After graduating from university and stepping into the next phase of my life, I felt a pull—something I hadn’t felt in years. It was the same feeling I used to get in high school, sitting in art class, completely lost in the moment, paintbrush in hand, letting the world around me melt away.
Art had always been my escape. I remember those double periods in art class when I was 15 or 16—two blissful hours where time seemed to stand still. Painting came naturally to me, and it was clear from the start that this was more than a skill; it was a part of who I was. But, like many of us do, I took the “safe” route.
A Different Path
After high school, I decided to pursue science and math—subjects I excelled in and enjoyed. I was drawn to the medical and health fields and eventually earned a degree in biomedical engineering. It felt practical, secure, and promising for a steady career. But even as I studied and worked toward this path, a part of me always dreamed of painting again.
For nearly seven years, I didn’t pick up a paintbrush. Life was busy, and I convinced myself that art wasn’t part of the plan anymore. But during those years, creativity still found me in other ways.
Discovering My Eye for Design
While I wasn’t painting, I found myself drawn to fashion, lifestyle, and design. Colors, trends, and aesthetics captivated me, and I loved weaving those elements into my own life. Whether it was putting together an outfit or curating my space, I found joy in expressing creativity through the details.
Travelling and new experiences exposed me to different cultures, design environments, and styles. From architecture to interiors, I soaked it all in. Over time, I matured—not just personally but in how I saw the world. I developed a sharper eye for detail, balance, and beauty, which would later influence my approach to painting.
The Return to Art
Everything changed when I graduated, started working, and moved into my own flat. I needed artwork for my walls, and the thought of buying something ready-made didn’t sit right with me. Why buy someone else’s vision when I could create my own?
That simple thought sparked something in me. I bought some canvases and paints, and I started creating artwork for my home. What began as a personal project quickly turned into something much bigger.
As I shared my work on social media, people began to notice. I received commissions, messages of encouragement, and interest in my creative process. But picking up a brush after seven years wasn’t easy—I knew I had a long way to go to create the kind of art I envisioned.
Finding My Voice as an Artist
I dedicated myself to experimenting, practicing, and developing my style. I envisioned art that wasn’t just about beauty but about creating harmony in interiors. I began researching the interior design market, exploring how art can elevate a space, complement trends, and evoke emotions.
Over time, I discovered my love for oversized, large-scale pieces. There’s something magical about working on a large canvas—pouring energy, movement, and texture into every corner. These pieces have the power to transform a space, to make a statement, and to carry the weight of a story.
Art as Connection
Painting has become more than a skill; it’s a form of meditation and self-expression. I’ve worked to connect deeply with my emotions, my surroundings, and my inner voice, allowing them to guide the flow of paint. My goal is always to create something that speaks to people, that brings joy, meaning, and connection into their lives.
Art is so much more than decor. It helps us reflect, question, and feel. It reminds us of the beauty in imperfection and the rhythm of the universe. I believe art has the power to transform a space into something special—a feeling you can’t replicate in any other way.
